Sadly the replacement also has pinstripes. While not immediately apparent, they are noticeable in certain whites or lighter colors, and only on parts of the display just like the first one. I will be returning and researching other alternatives.

Replacement monitor arrived and so far no sign of pinstripes. I am going to wait a day to declare victory since I didn’t notice them on the defective monitor until a day later (even though that’s probably because I only had like 5 minutes on the first day with that one.)

Anyone else mildly bothered by Google’s loose meaning of the term “docs”?

Where and How I Tweet, Toot, and Post

Given Twitter’s recent changes (read: “dickishness”), I’ve chosen to diversify where I share my brief ramblings. At the moment of this slightly less brief rambling, those interested can follow me on Twitter (@jackwellborn), Micro.blog (@jackwellborn), Mastodon.social (@jackwellborn), and here at jackwellborn.com. My goal moving forward is to create and share original posts from here since I like owning the originating source and also like the idea of having ramblings of all sizes coming from the same place (except for those particularly long and technology focused ramblings, which will still live on wormsandviruses.com.) Finally, conversations will still occur within each specific platform so while I don’t have any ambitions to repost Twitter replies here, for example, I still look forward to having shared ramblings with strangers and friends on the internet.

I can’t say how disciplined I will be in this effort, nor how long it will last, but I can say this feels like the right thing for me to do right now.

@liss Do you also have the Dell P2415Q 4K monitor? If so, I just got one and am facing subtle horizontal gray lines on white, and was wondering if you’ve experienced this issue. Hoping this one is just a lemon and that a replacement will suffice.

So outside of helping identify that the gray lines are just as bad when you change the RGB of the monitor, Dell support was not much help. Luckily, I ordered on Amazon so I have set up a replacement. If the replacement is no good, I will be looking for an alternative. Stay Tuned!

Uh oh. New monitor shows what I can only describe as pinstripes on white or very light backgrounds. It feels like I am back on Mac OS X 10.3. Time to call Dell. Wish me luck.

Repost – First Impressions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

After hearing Myke and Tiff fawn over this game, I decided the go back to my own original impressions. Below is what I first posted to Facebook in March of 2017, right after Breath of the Wild’s release.

  1. It’s gorgeous. Stylistically speaking, Breath of the Wild feels like a sequel to Wind Waker, but with actual Hyrule instead of endless ocean.
  2. People seem to be comparing it to Majora’s Mask and Link’s Awakening, because like those games, Breath of the Wild breaks out of many Zelda conventions. While that’s true and those are two of my favorite games, the feeling of being a small hero in an overwhelming world reminds me more of the original NES Zelda.
  3. It has faith in the player’s ability to figure things out. Incessant tips and how-tos that plagued recent Zeldas are gone.
  4. Finally, it’s a great example that an open world doesn’t mean sacrificing the details of a well designed and directed experience. This still feels like a Zelda game.

Also I think it’s worth reiterating that while some may think retina is only useful for people working in video or graphics, it’s invaluable for any professional who spends most of their time staring at a screen.
