One thing I’ve noticed over the course of my career is how often QA is treated as “women’s work” in many orgs. I assume this is because many developers treat QA as subservient to development in the same way our patriarchal society treats women as subservient to men. 1/3

Universal Control also really doubles down on the notion that iPads are really “meatspace windows” (a term that I think was first coined by John @Siracusa.)

Two quick thoughts Universal Control:

1) Easily being able to perform personal tasks on my iPad while using my work laptop is a game changer.

2) It’s going to be hilarious when iPadOS necessarily has to support the esc key.

When we bought our home six years ago, I felt like a fool who was buying at the top of a bubble. Now, seeing how the market has evolved since, I thank our lucky stars that we bought when we did.

Time was owning a home was attainable to those with a high school diploma, then it became a college degree. In many cities today, it increasingly requires two relatively high earners just to entertain the thought.

Our neighbors were just given 30 days notice to move out of the house they’ve been leasing. You might think “that’s a risk of leasing”, but they can’t afford to buy because investors have largely priced out working professionals out of the market.

I expected parenting was going to be work, but I underestimated how little energy I’d have for “logistics.” I’ve taken personal days just to get stuff done I used to do on weekends. I’ve likely overpaid for work simply because I don’t have time/energy to research a fair price.

Recorded compositions of music originally written for midi can often sound like a cover, and not in bad way either. Covers can be very good. That said, the music in FFVI Pixel Remaster sounds like it was always a part of the game. (See also: Link’s Awakening on the Switch.)

My 5k Soapbox

Note: This post is a consolidation of a series of Tweets originally published February 24th, 2022.

Mac 5k Letter 'a' Mac 4k Letter 'a' Mac 4k Letter 'a' Scaled to 5k

Here are three pictures of the letter “a”. The first is from my 5k iMac at native resolution, the second is from my 4k display also at native resolution, and the last is from my 4k display scaled to pseudo 5k resolution. Do you notice how much blurrier the last scaled “a” is?

Windows 4k Letter 'a' Windows 4k Letter 'a' Scaled to 5k

Here are two more pictures of the letter “a”, this time from Windows 10 running on the same 4k display. The first is native and the second is scaled to pseudo 5k. Despite Windows’s different anti-aliasing, the last one is also noticeably blurrier.

Most displays sold are 27”. 4k 27” displays force you to choose between crisp, but oversized text or appropriately sized, but slightly blurry text. To get appropriately sized crisp text, you need 5k at 27” and yet there is only one 5k monitor on the market.

I get on a soapbox about this because most people assume high resolution detail is for the likes of graphics designers, but as a software engineer, I stare at text all day long. Display makers, please offer more 27” 5k options.

On Siracusa‘s argument for standing teams, I have been thinking about how allergic Americans have become to idea of downtime, and how many successful products end up failing because companies reshuffle teams for fear that someone somewhere might not be maximally productive.
