The All Powerful and Deeply Flawed Calendar

A small revelation I had this morning is that the calendar is an inherently broken metaphor, especially for those doing deep work. Calendars speak in terms of “busy” or “free”, but in use that translates to “busy with other meetings” and “free to meet”. The metaphor has no accommodation for anything else so all other work defaults to the latter. In practice, this allows meetings to consume time completely unopposed simply because all other work has no mechanism1 to push back within the all powerful calendar.
